You know what? I’ve had two great experiences recently that reminded me of childhood (hey it wasn’t THAT long ago, OK?!) and they got me thinking more about our memories, making memories and being a kid again.
The first one was a humble trip to the cinema to see the new “Superman Returns” movie – great movie by the way – you see, as I walked in to my local cinema to see Superman I was taken back to 1979 (I was only five!), but now, even at 6’2” the screen is still so big, the auditorium dark, the anxious audience sat there awaiting the start of the film munching on their expensive popcorn and slurping even more expensive fizzy drinks, my own anticipation of what was to come; an exciting film featuring a comic book hero – yep, as I walked in I was a kid all over again (though some will say I’ve never grown up anyway!)
I can remember as a five year old sitting in the cinema with my parents waiting for the start of the original Superman film starring Christopher Reeve, this simple walk in to the auditorium took me straight back there.
I thoroughly enjoyed the film, though I think the ending could be better, and some of that may well be down to the whole regression experience I’d gone through, the NLP’ers amongst you will probably tell you I have some kind of ‘good time’ anchor set up within my brain, activated by going through a similar experience, who knows? If you do have any thoughts on this let me know.
The second experience was helping a friend out, he’s got his own business and needed some help for a day and as I had the time available in my schedule I agreed. The help he needed though was driving a mini digger! Now I’d got no experience of these things whatsoever but as soon as I sat in what can only be described as the largest Tonka toy I’ve ever played with, I was a kid again, only 6’2” and with a much bigger toy! Once more it reminded of playing with my own Tonka toys when I was young. Pulling the levers to manoeuvre the digging bucket and drive this big boys toy on it’s tracks, it was truly fabulous!
So here’s what I wanted to share with you, what is there that you could be doing that brings back memories of happy times for you? Perhaps times you’ve shared with your loved ones, with your parents, your own children? Whatever. And can’t we just learn so much from kids? Aren’t they incredibly honest, funny, curious and committed? How much more could you achieve if you were more like a child more often?
- What answers would you get from your team, colleagues or customers if you were as curious as a child and asked more questions?
- What more could you achieve if you were as committed to your goals as kids are?
(Have you ever seen or experienced a child asking for a toy or bag of sweets?! And lets not forget the unerring commitment to learning to walk!)
- What rubbish could you cut through in your work, perhaps in meetings by being as honest as a child? What about socially? Ever gone to a party you didn’t want to because you didn’t want to upset the host?
- And finally, how much happier would you be if you spent more time having fun? Now, if you say you’re too busy to go have fun, then you’re TOO busy!
So there you have it, you have my permission to go be a kid for the day, you’ll be amazed at what memories you can bring back up, what feelings you’ll release and what you'll achieve, aren’t you just a little curious now to find out?

Bringing back those 'lost' Memories
We seem to think that we’ve forgotten a lot of what we’ve experienced and especially as a child, the further back we go, the harder it is to remember, however, I’m a firm believer that our memories are all in the brain somewhere, we just haven’t found the right hook to fish them out. So, if you’re interested in trying to fish out some memories you thought were lost, then read on…
In order to do this, you’ll need what I call TAPAS time – that’s Time Alone, Peaceful And Still. When we’re at peace, not disturbed by day to day dramas our unconscious minds start to come up with answers to problems we have, it also has the ability for us to start delving back in to our memories (it’s also very relaxing!)
Get yourself comfortable, somwhere quiet you won't be disturbed. Think of something way back in your past, visualize yourself, as yourself, in the picture, is it something from school? A previous home? A work place? See the location in your mind as you look round, what is there in the picture that conjures up a memory, where does that take you? Who’s there? What are they saying? How are you feeling? I’ve recently remembered enjoyable times as a teenager just by mentally placing myself back in the car I had at the time (don’t ask!) but as you come up with each snippet so another will come back to you and a chain of past memories will start to present itself to you.
Self hypnosis works well for this and I’ve used self hypnosis myself in the past, go check out Amazon for books on hypnosis – self hypnosis is easy, safe and very relaxing, and it may just help you to bring back memories you initially thought were lost!
Email me and let me know what stuff you’ve managed to recall that you thought you’d lost – you might just find something really good!

I’m on the look out for speaking opportunities and wondered if you might like to help me? So who do you know who is organizing a conference? Or some kind of event that requires a speaker?
I thought I’d ask, after all, if you don’t ask, you don’t get. Now you may have seen me speak at one of the many gigs I’ve done over the past year, but the person you’d refer me to may not have, therefore I have a video showreel they can see, this is a short, five minute extract which gives an idea of what I speak on. Click here to see the video showreel.
So many speakers will do the breaking boards with a karate chop, or breaking an arrow with your neck, or a firewalk or whatever, and I have to admit these are fantastic to see – why not go for something different and have some fun with some memory stuff? Audiences are amazed at just how powerful their brains are!
So pass this on, or let me have the details of someone you think would benefit from having me speak at their event, you’ll be doing us both a favour. |
